Tentative Itinerary


DAY: 1 - Jan: 5

Arrival In Quito
Welcome to Ecuador! On arrival at the Quito airport, you will be met by your private English speaking driver and transferred to your accommodations. Check in and enjoy the remainder of the day free at leisure.

DAY: 2 - Jan: 6

Otavalo
We leave Quito early in the morning, after a hearty breakfast. The mornings are usually spectacularly clear and crisp in the high mountains and the 90 minute drive to our destination(more than 2,000 meters - 3,200 ft - above the sea level ) is full of breathtaking vistas. This is a region surrounded by majestic mountain ranges only 40 miles wide, full of fertile valleys and scenic beauty, inhabited by a kind people anxious to show you the customs and cultural heritage that make them so distinct. We will make our first stop at a Peguche Community to learn about the culture and people of the area. Afterwards, we will continue to Otavalo market, one of the most well known throughout the Andes. The indigenous weavers from the villages around Otavalo are among the most talented in Ecuador. The Otavaleños at adapting their products to market demands, have won recognition and prosperity on an international level. After this visit we will have lunch in a typical restaurant. Lastly. we make a visit to a rescue center for the protection and recovery of a number of species of birds of prey including the magnificent Andean Condor whose wing span can reach more than eight feet.

DAY: 3 - Jan: 7

Otavalo

Today, we’ll drive to the Cotacachi-Cayapas ecological reserve for a hike at Cuicocha, a deep-blue crater lake on the lower southern flanks of Mount Cotacachi after the hike we will stop at the picturesque colonial town of Cotacachi, famous for its leatherwork.

DAY: 4 - Jan: 8

Cotopaxi National Park

Early this morning, after breakfast, we leave Otavalo and go to the South of Ecuador towards Machachi from where we head towards the Cotopaxi National Park one of the most beautiful protected areas of Ecuador near the volcano Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world. We can bike or horse ride to the park at an extra cost. From here, weather permitting, you will be able to see the snow capped summits of both the Cotopaxi and the Antisana volcanoes. Our walk starts at the base of the volcano for a 2 hours hike towards Cotopaxi’s J. Ribas refuge (4,800 m) from where expeditions leave at midnight to the highest active volcanoes summit launch. After the hike we will drive down to the park’s Interpretation center to learn about the history of its major eruptions as well as the local flora and fauna. Later, you will go to Limpiopungo lake and discover the area by walking around it. After lunch we will go to our Hacienda we will have to the opportunity to interacting with the local people, you will have to opportunity to do a typical dish of the zone and aslo learn the techniques of milky, harvesting, planting.

DAY: 5 - Jan: 9

Quilotoa
After breakfast, you will visit the volcanic crater of Quilotoa with a serene mysterious looking green lake inside. The volcano's bowels 400 m down head towards a deep ascending cut in the rim of the volcano right of the car park or we can walk around the total circumference of the rim (3 hours approximately). We will visit a workshop of Tigua, The indigenous artists of Tigua are renowned for their colorful paintings depicting life high in the Andes mountains of rural Ecuador. Their paintings, all done on sheep hide with enamel paint, reflect the history, festivals and rich legends of peoples whose traditions date back to pre-Columbian times. Today you can learn and participate in this art. Afterwards, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

DAY: 6 - Jan: 10

Cotopaxi
Today you will be met by your guide to embark on the first day of your 4 day trek.First we will climb the Pasochoa peak. At 4,200 meters this is a challenge that will get our engines revving in anticipation of the second part of our adventure. Access is not difficult and our hike to the peak will take about 3 hours over grassland trails. From here you will get a spectacular view of the mountains surrounding Quito, the inspiring scenery of the Pasochoa crater, as well as the impressive surrounding mountain crests: Antisana, Sincholagua, Quilinda–a, Cotopaxi, Rumi–ahui, Coraz—n and the twin Iliniza peaks. The second part of our day consists of the descent to the Pita river canyon, a downhill walk of about 3 hours through grasslands and low Chaparro forests, ending at the Cotopaxi Pungo Lodge, situated at about 3,200 meters above sea level..

DAY: 7 - Jan: 11

Cotopaxi
Today, enjoy a scenic hike across high mountain forests and along the course of the Pita river, whose source is the glacial meltwater of the giant of the Park, Cotopaxi. The hike will take around 6 or 7 hours, and the descent is gradual from the humid Andean forests through the grasslands of Cotopaxi down to the area known as the Pedregal.The day ends at the Los Morti–os hacienda, a cozy retreat designed for mountaineers. The lodge is located at the entrance to Cotopaxi National Park, at approximately 3,600 meters above sea level.

DAY: 8 - Jan: 12

Cotopaxi
Today we continue our journey along the Pita river canyon. But now the scenery changes: we enter the flatlands on the Eastern side of Cotopaxi where we will see the foothills of Mt.Sincholagua and the majestic Eastern side of Cotopaxi,crossing an arid plain before arriving at the Hoster’a Tambopaxi, one of the worlds most advantaged mountain lodges. The journey will take about 5 hours, through a landscape that varies between grassland and stony plain. Along the way we may see the wild horses that run in the area, as well as some of the better know birds such as the Curiquingue and, with a bit of luck, the giant Andean Condor.

DAY: 9 - Jan: 13

Cotopaxi
From the lodge we will drive in our private vehicle to the parking area of the Cotopaxi mountain refuge. We will then walk for approximately an hour before reaching the mountaineers lodge, and hike from there to the edge of the glacier, a walk of approximately two hours. From here, the northern side of the mountain offers a spectacular panorama. You will be able to identify (with the help of our guide) all the ground we have covered since the first day of our adventure: Quito, its valleys, the distant mountains in the north, and the road from Pasochoa, through the Pita canyon, to el Pedregal, Sincholagua, Rumi–ahui and the magnificent Limpiopungo valley. The descent, which will take approximately 2 hours, takes the same route back to the parking lot and we head back to Quito.

DAY: 10 - Jan: 14

Quito Departure
Today, you will be picked up at your hotel and transferred to the airport for your departing flight.
